Our Community

The district of Monbulk takes in the majority of the Dandenong Ranges, a beautiful region located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. The Hills, as they are known to locals, cover a vast area of approximately 500 square kilometers and comprise over 35 towns, each with its own unique history and charm. The region is home to lush forests, cascading waterfalls, breath-taking views, and a diverse array of flora and fauna.

The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong people are the traditional custodians of this land, and their culture and heritage continue to be an essential part of the region's identity. The name of the town of Monbulk is believed to derive from the indigenous name Monbolok/Monbolac, meaning ‘hiding place in the hills’.

European settlement in the area began in the mid-19th century, and many of the towns still retain their historic buildings and landmarks, such as the Puffing Billy Railway and the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens.

The Dandenongs also offer a wide range of recreational activities for locals, including hiking, cycling, picnicking, and wildlife watching. The region is home to numerous parks and gardens, including the famous National Rhododendron Gardens and the William Ricketts Sanctuary.
In addition to its natural beauty and outdoor activities, our region is also home to a vibrant community of artists, artisans, and creatives. The region boasts a rich cultural scene, with regular art exhibitions, music festivals, and craft markets showcasing the talents of local artists.

I’m honoured to represent this magical place in the Parliament of Victoria.

I’d like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet today. I would also like to pay my respects to Elders past and present and future custodians and Elders of the nation.
